Scream 4 Review

Elijah Hunt

Scream 4 is directed by Wes Craven and stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette once again.

Scream 4 was the triumphant return to the slasher genre that had been dying throughout the mid-2000's and wasn't bad by any means, but I don't think it was great.

There's a lot to like here like some of the new characters: Jill, Kirby, Charley, and Officer Judy who are absolute delights to watch. That said, our returning characters are just as good as they were in Scream 1-3.

While the franchise did lay dormant for eleven years, I still feel like its the true sequel to Scream 2 over Scream 3. That could be because Kevin Williamson returns as the writer once again instead of Ehren Kruger who wrote Scream 3.

Williamson is truly the master of writing teen slashers as he wrote the first, second and this Scream movie, but he also wrote I Know What You Did Last Summer one and two, The Faculty, and Halloween: H20, which are all fantastic movies.

So it feels like the franchise gets back to its roots after Scream 3 felt like it was a bit too distant from what the franchise was.

Besides it feeling true to the franchise, it does have an odd weak spot. What is up with the lightening? It looks so weird. I think they over-lit the entire thing then tried to put a filter on it in post-production. It's easily the worst part of this movie as it completely taints the viewing experience.

That's my only real gripe with the movie though. It's a pretty fun ride with a great Ghostface reveal and great characters.

Scream 4 gets a B.
